Protecting Horses & Ponies from the Elements:
your responsibility to fully understand your horse or ponies welfare needs and
what the law requires you to do, to meet those needs. (Animal Welfare Act 2006).
In view of the provisions within the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is the responsibility of the owner, keeper or other responsible person, to adequately assess the need to protect their horse(s) or pony(s) from exposure to the cold (wind chill, especially when their coats are thin and wet), from the damp , the heat, flies etc and provide, when weather/other environmental conditions dictate;
a). a field shelter or shelters where natural cover does not exist or such cover is inadequate.
b). suitable rug(s) of the correct size and design for the type/age of horse or pony, the weather conditions and which are correctly fitted.
c). Relocation to a suitable stable/loose box until weather conditions improve.
